SMCC Softball Defeats Jackson College 3-1 to Open NJCAA DII World Series

SPARTANBURG, SC ---

The South Mountain Community College softball team (53-8) defeated Jackson College (MI) 3-1 in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II World Series at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, S.C. Sophomore Anisa Reynolds tossed a complete game in the circle and freshmen Iliana Munoz and Mia Franco had two hits apiece as the Cougars overcame an early 1-0 deficit to down the Jets. 

SMCC will now face Jones College (MS) at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT in the second round of the double-elimination tournament. The game will be broadcast on the NJCAA Network. 

After the Jets scored an unearned run in the top of the first, Reynolds settled in to improve to 21-3 on the season. She scattered four hits and walked two while fanning two over seven innings. 

At the plate, Munoz roped an RBI double to score Annalise Chavez all the way from first base in the third to tie the game. She added a single to lead off the game. Freshman Halle Hogan than blasted a two-out RBI single in the third to score Munoz and give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage. 

In the sixth, Reynolds reached on an error and Franco singled to put two on base. Freshman Shawna Kim came into run for Reynolds at second, and freshman Sarah Potter then dropped down a sac bunt to move the runners to second and third. Freshman Vanessa Philpot tacked on an insurance run with a sac fly and give SMCC a 3-1 cushion. 

Jones College defeated Potomac State 6-5 in eight innings in the first round. The Bobcats are the Gulf District B representative after finishing second to Copiah-Lincoln in the Region 23 Tournament. The Bobcats finished the regular season with a 46-8 record. Nia Luckett is batting .452 with seven doubles, two triples, six home runs, 34 RBIS and 27 stolen bases, while Carly Lewis is batting .423 with 18 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 64 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. 

In the circle, Holly Craft is 17-2 with a 1.86 ERA and 149 strikeouts in 120.2 innings of work. Luckett is 13-3 with a 2.16 ERA and 115 K's, while Hanna Zeitz is 12-3 with 65 K's and a 2.65 ERA.
